USA Games Spotlight: Antonio Sainz

By Ashley Carney

Happiness comes from the people we surround ourselves with. It’s those contagious smiles and laughs that we all live for, and the fun memories we make along the way. For Antonio Sainz, a Unified soccer player, his happiness comes from the moments he spends with his teammates.

Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, Antonio always knew he wanted to be a soccer player. His favorite player to watch is Lionel Messi, the star of Barcelona. And although his love for playing soccer is prominent, his favorite part about the sport is seeing all of his teammates be happy.

“I just want everybody to have fun,” Antonio said.

When asked who his favorite superhero was, Antonio said it was his dad. His father is the one who taught him to always have compassion for others.

“He wanted me to have a good life and to love the people,” Antonio said.

This will be Antonio’s first Special Olympics USA Games, and he is more than happy to be a part of it. He hopes to make it to the finals with his Unified soccer team, but is most looking forward to spending time with everyone.

“I just want to have fun with my teammates,” he said.
