Held annually, Capitol Hill Day stands as a significant occasion for Special Olympics athletes, assuming the roles of leaders and self-advocates. During this event, they seize the opportunity to elevate awareness and enlighten their Members of Congress about the pivotal initiatives undertaken by Special Olympics. The athletes engage in a series of meetings over several days, passionately advocating for the ongoing support that is crucial for the organization’s mission.
This year, from February 5-7, Special Olympics Southern California (SOSC) proudly dispatched a delegation comprising athletes and athlete leaders Joseph Gorin and Sasha Cruz, along with key volunteers Ingelis Jensen and Travis Stock-Tucker, to represent the region at the Capitol. Their mission was to articulate the importance of continued backing from Congress for the impactful work carried out by Special Olympics.
Upon his return to Southern California, Travis Stock-Tucker comments on the profound experience in Washington D.C. for Specialty Olympics Capitol Hill Day.
Reflecting on my time in Washington D.C. for Specialty Olympics Capitol Hill Day fills me with gratitude and hope. Collaborating with leaders to secure appropriations for Unified Champion Schools and Health Initiatives such as Healthy Athletes reaffirmed the importance of advocacy in creating a more inclusive and healthier future for all.
As these dedicated representatives from Special Olympics Southern California passionately engage in the legislative process, their commitment serves as a beacon of inspiration, reinforcing the organization’s dedication to fostering positive change on both a local and national level.
