Raymond and Vivian McGrew: A Shared Journey of Love and Service

Raymond and Vivian McGrew, a couple deeply rooted in their faith and love for their community, have spent over a decade dedicating their time and energy to Special Olympics Southern California. Their journey is not just one of volunteerism but of profound connection, joy, and the transformative power of giving back.

Their path to volunteerism with Special Olympics was paved with inspiration from loved ones and a deep desire to make a difference. Raymond fondly recalls how Vivian’s longstanding commitment to Special Olympics drew him into the fold.

“What inspired me was when I got married to my wife, she was doing it (volunteering) already,” he shares. Vivian’s daughter, Crystal Jenkins, also played a pivotal role in igniting her passion for volunteering with Special Olympics. “That’s what got me started to become a volunteer,” Vivian explains.

Their volunteer roles have been diverse, ranging from cheering in the stands to working at Rafer’s Boutique and assisting at event booths. But for Raymond and Vivian, the true essence of their volunteer journey lies in the joy of serving others. “It’s a blessing to be able to volunteer and help other people – that’s where the blessing comes in for me,” Raymond reflects. Vivien echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the joy of connecting with athletes and fellow volunteers alike.

Special Olympics has left an indelible mark on Raymond and Vivian’s lives, enriching them with profound experiences and cherished memories. Raymond finds immense fulfillment in witnessing the athletes’ sheer joy and camaraderie, particularly during moments of victory. “When they win their medals, and how they are so joyful… that’s really a blessing,” he shares. Vivian is equally moved by the athletes’ infectious enthusiasm, eagerly anticipating each event and the opportunity to interact with the community.

Among their most cherished memories are the Saturday night dances during the Summer and Fall Game Championships, where athletes take to the dance floor with unbridled joy. While Raymond emphasizes the profound sense of fulfillment that comes from witnessing such moments of pure happiness, Vivian reflects on the reciprocal nature of volunteering with Special Olympics and how they receive as much as they give. “Not only are we volunteering to give to them, but we receive so much from them,” she explains.

For Raymond and Vivian, Special Olympics Southern California is more than just an organization; it’s a beacon of inclusion and positive change in their community. Their involvement contributes to fostering a culture of acceptance and spreading the message of Special Olympics to others.

Looking ahead, Raymond and Vivian’s aspirations for their continued involvement with Special Olympics are simple yet profound – to continue serving as long as they are able, spreading joy, and fostering connections within the community. Their message to others considering volunteering with Special Olympics is one of encouragement and compassion. “Have the compassion in your heart to be a volunteer,” Raymond urges, emphasizing the joy and privilege of serving others.

In the hearts of Raymond and Vivian McGrew, the spirit of volunteerism with Special Olympics Southern California continues to shine brightly, illuminating the path towards a more inclusive and compassionate future for all.
