A Decade of Inclusion: Reflecting on the 2015 World Games and a Legacy of Partnership and Care

“I never actually saw the Opening Ceremonies,” Dr. Aaron Rubin admits with a smile.

It’s a surprising statement from someone who played such a critical role in one of the largest sporting events Los Angeles has ever hosted — the 2015 Special Olympics World Games.

Back then, Dr. Rubin served as Medical Director for the Games, overseeing care across every venue, sideline, and emergency response zone. His Opening Ceremonies experience? Spent off to the side, tending to an athlete in need — a moment that, even ten years later, perfectly encapsulates his dedication to athlete well-being.

Now Chief Healthcare Officer for Special Olympics Southern California (SOSC), Dr. Rubin reflects on how that experience shaped his journey.

“I’ve worked with high school, college, and pro athletes,” he says. “But I’ve never felt as satisfied as I did taking care of the athletes at the Special Olympics. They’re just… sincere. Thankful. Joyful to work with.”

A Decade of Impact

As we celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the 2015 Special Olympics World Games Los Angeles, the memories flood back: 6,500 athletes from 165 countries, tens of thousands of volunteers, and a city transformed by the spirit of inclusion.

But beyond the headlines and fanfare, it was people like Dr. Rubin — and countless behind-the-scenes heroes — who made the Games a life-changing experience for athletes, families, and spectators alike.

Dr. Rubin remembers the camaraderie most:

“It’s always come down to the people — from around the world, from right here in SoCal. Many of them I still work with today at SOSC.”

His journey since then has been one of growth, service, and deeper understanding.

“I didn’t know as much about Special Olympics back then,” he shares. “Looking back, I wish I had. But I’m grateful I’ve had the chance to keep learning and contributing.”

Partnership That Powers Progress

The health and safety of every athlete remains a top priority at SOSC — and that wouldn’t be possible without the unwavering support of long-standing partners like Kaiser Permanente, the Official Health Partner of Special Olympics Southern California.

For years, Kaiser Permanente has provided vital services and support, helping ensure athletes receive high-quality care on and off the field. Their commitment to whole-person wellness — physical, mental, and emotional — mirrors the mission at the heart of SOSC’s work.

As we look back on the decade since the 2015 World Games and ahead to the future, we celebrate the power of partnership and purpose. The flame first lit in Los Angeles still burns bright, carried forward by leaders like Dr. Rubin, champions like our health partners, and the athletes who continue to inspire the world.
