Strikes, Smiles, and Sportsmanship: SOSC Bowling Championship Brings the Heat to Lakewood

On a blazing summer Saturday, while the sun scorched the pavement outside, the real heat was inside Cal Bowl, where 389 athletes from across Southern California lit up the lanes with passion, precision, and pure joy. The Special Olympics Southern California Bowling Championship, held on August 23, marked the finale of SOSC’s summer bowling season and it was nothing short of electric.

Despite the high temperatures, the atmosphere inside was cool, competitive, and full of heart. From high-fives to heartfelt cheers, every frame was a celebration of skill and inclusion.

Athletes from Across the Region

Competitors traveled from 13 counties, including Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, Riverside, Ventura, and even as far as Imperial and Inyo, to vie for gold, silver, and bronze medals. The championship featured both traditional and Unified Bowling, where athletes with and without intellectual disabilities teamed up to compete side-by-side, a powerful display of teamwork and unity.

“This competition is a beautiful reminder of what sports are all about – courage, joy, and connection,” said Kelly Pond, President and CEO of SOSC. “Watching these athletes compete and support one another is truly inspiring.”

A Day of Celebration and Competition

The day was filled with excitement and celebration, split into two sessions that highlighted both athletic achievement and community pride. The morning began with an energetic Opening Ceremony at 8:30 a.m., setting the tone for the competitions that followed from 9 a.m. to noon. Athletes from across the regions showcased their skills and sportsmanship, with awards presented at the end of the session to honor their accomplishments.

Timm HannemThe afternoon session resumed with a second Opening Ceremony at 12:30 p.m., where Timm Hannem was honored as the 2025 Bowling Coach of the Season. Timm has been a pillar of the Mighty Menifee program since 2019, demonstrating exceptional leadership and dedication. His impact extends beyond bowling, having supported the Temecula swimming program during the Spring Season and contributed to various sports throughout the year. With the Menifee, Temecula, and Murrieta programs now combined, Timm has taken on the challenge of organizing practices for over 110 athletes. His coaching philosophy blends skill development with character building, fostering teamwork, resilience, and a love for sports. Under his guidance, the team has achieved championship success and grown both physically and mentally.

This year’s championship wasn’t just about strikes and spares, it was about breaking barriers, building friendships, and showing the world what inclusion truly looks like. With 12 Unified Partners competing, the event highlighted the power of sports to unite people of all abilities. Competitions continued into the afternoon from 1 to 4 p.m., concluding with additional award ceremonies that celebrated the dedication and achievements of every athlete

Health, Support, and Community Spirit

Off the lanes, the Healthy Athletes Pavilion was buzzing with activity. Athletes received 111 free health screenings, including podiatry and dental checks, along with wellness tips and incentives. This is all part of SOSC’s commitment to athlete healthcare.

The championship was powered by an outstanding team of 232 volunteers, 130 coaches, and 20 Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) officers from the Long Beach Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department – Lakewood Station. Their energy and unwavering support kept the event running smoothly from the first roll to the final medal ceremony, creating a safe, spirited, and empowering environment for all.

And as the competition – and the summer heat – reached its peak, a special shoutout goes to the Knights of Columbus, who kept everyone fueled and refreshed by grilling up delicious chicken sandwiches. Their tasty contribution helped keep athletes and volunteers energized throughout the day.

A Day to Remember

As the final pins fell and medals were awarded, one thing was clear: the spirit of Special Olympics burned bright in Lakewood. In a day filled with sweat, smiles, and unforgettable moments, athletes proved that greatness isn’t measured by scores, it’s measured by heart.
