LONG BEACH (May 16, 2017) – Special Olympics Southern California is proud to announce Tom Stevens as this year’s Rafer Johnson Humanitarian Award winner.
Stevens, chairman and president of Los Angeles Capital Management, started his relationship with Special Olympics Southern California as a coach in the 1990s. He has chaired Breakfast with Champions since 2003.
“I just really enjoy what it’s all about,” said Stevens, who also serves on the organization’s Board of Directors. “I enjoy helping people so it’s just become a very, very favorite activity of mine.”
The Rafer Johnson Humanitarian Award, which will be presented at Breakfast with Champions from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on June 10, is presented to a person who exemplifies the qualities of its namesake.
The event will feature a Parade of Champions, with leaders from the sports and business world celebrating the athletes of Special Olympics. The keynote speaker will be UCLA men’s basketball head coach Steve Alford.
Breakfast with Champions is part of Summer Games weekend, where more than 1,100 athletes compete for ribbons and medals in six sports – athletics, basketball, bocce, golf, gymnastics and swimming – on June 10 and 11 at Cal State Long Beach and Recreation Park’s nine-hole golf course. Summer Games is free to the public.
