LONG BEACH, Calif. (June 21, 2017) – Today, June 21, marks the first day of summer and it will be a season of fun, food and events for a good cause. The summer months feature fundraising events that will directly impact Special Olympics Southern California athletes.
The month of July will feature a pair of Southern California institutions running month long campaigns to raise funds for SOSC athletes. It also features an opportunity for teams of 25 to pull a 757 airplane.
Albertsons Vons Pavilions, the presenting sponsor of Summer Games, will once again feature an in store fundraising campaign from July 8 – August 1. Shakey’s Pizza will also get into the act with an in store fundraising partnership running from July 1-31. Finally, the summer won’t be complete without the annual LETR Plane Pull, which will be Aug. 19 at Long Beach Airport.
This year’s Albertsons Vons Pavilions campaign will kick-off July 8 and extend through August 1. Their goal is to raise $1.5 million to support 3,000 athletes. This year’s campaign will feature the Los Angeles Rams Pro Bowl Punter Johnny Hekker. Accompanying Hekker will be SOSC athletes Manasa Iyer and Marco Martinez.
Those shopping at one of the 355 stores in Southern California can simply make donations through the keypads at any Albertsons Vons Pavilions. To find a store near you, visit: ALBERTSONS | VONS | PAVILIONS.
Celebrating more than 60 years of food, family and fun, Shakey’s Pizza will offer a similar promotion for customers to give during check-out at 26 of their participating Southern California restaurants. With plenty of great food throughout July, there is a perfect way to burn that energy and giveback during one of SOSC’s most unique events, the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run Plane Pull.
Test your strength, stamina, and endurance at the 12th annual Plane Pull on Saturday, August 19 at the Long Beach Airport. This unique competition puts you and a team of 25 against a FedEx 757 airplane to benefit Special Olympics Southern California athletes. No skill level — or muscles — required. The team that pulls the 124,000-pound aircraft 12 feet in the shortest amount of time wins! Each team is asked to raise a minimum of $1,250 or an individual commitment of $50 to support Special Olympics Southern California.
The Plane Pull is a fundraising event that is part of the Law Enforcement Torch Run® for Special Olympics Southern California. Many local officers and law enforcement agencies throughout Southern California will have teams competing. So let’s see if you are as good as these trained professionals.
