LETR Spotlight: Chief Thomas E. Gazsi

Chief Gazsi started his career with the Los Angeles Port Police, hired as Deputy Chief to oversee Emergency Management Operations in 2014. In 2015, Gazsi was moved to an acting role and eventually appointed to Los Angeles Port Police Chief later that same year. In 2017, Chief Gazsi, gave Officer Stacey Creech the endorsement to join the Law Enforcement Torch Run council and the amazing journey began.

In the years since the LA Port Police became actively involved, he has made great strides to ensure that LETR continued to support Special Olympics Sothern California in many ways. Chief Gazsi has been a member of the Port Police Plane Pull team every years since 2017 (5 years) through generous donations and/or standing next to fellow Officers and encourages members of our department to participate. LA Port Police Torch Runs have also been more successful with participants and awareness as he encouraged Watch Commanders to allow on-duty Officers to join the runs as Guardians of the Flame.

Chief Gazsi has paved the way to ensure that members of the LA Port Police have the opportunity and the resources to attend/participate in multiple events throughout the year to support Special Olympics. Port Police have also attended Summer Games and provided static vehicle displays, fall games and participated in medal presentations, and participated/attended in several inaguaral LETR events with on and off-duty Officers. During the pandemic, Chief Gazsi assisted with valuable resources to organize a multi-agency “Thank you” video to SOSC athletes quarantining at home. In October of 2021, Chief Gazsi stopped by to show his support at the Long Beach Trunk or Treat event at Granada Beach. Later that same evening he was invited and attended an LETR speaking event with the Lamborghini Club in Orange County with, now, LETR State Director, Blake Chow. Chief Gazsi has continued to be a huge supporter of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics and it shows in his commitment to allow and support Officers to participate, spread awareness, and raise funds for all local athletes.
