Antelope Valley athlete, Corey Martin gets to check two new experiences off his bucket list. He will be competing at USA Games and traveling to Orlando, Florida for the first time! He shares his enthusiasm about connecting with teammates and representing Southern California in athletics competitions. When his coach informed him that he’d be going to Orlando, Corey recalls that he was extremely happy and so surprised that he shouted, “I’m going to Florida!”
Having never visited Orlando, Florida, Corey explains that aside from competing he cannot wait to explore all that the city has to offer. Staying in a hotel and meeting new friends from across the country are two things that he anticipates.
Participating in local Special Olympics Southern California competitions throughout the years has prepared Corey for this life-changing opportunity. Athletes of all sports and abilities can attest that incorporating a variety of workouts and being consistent are key to one’s performance. Corey’s ‘let’s do it’ mindset towards training is something that everyone can find motivation in. “I exercise a lot,” he says. “I set the timer up and just have a good time and enjoy myself.” He walks six miles on the treadmill each day and on top of that, he schedules time to attend in-person practices with local Antelope Valley athletes.
The Special Olympics medal is a symbol of victory, inclusion, and hard work. Corey doesn’t miss an opportunity to share his passion for winning. When asked what he loves most about Special Olympics, the track star says, “I like it because I get to run so I can win medals!” With USA Games checked off his list of accomplishments, he has World Games in his rearview!
