In celebration of Down Syndrome Awareness Month, we’d like to introduce you to Jason Martinez, a remarkable Special Olympics athlete from Carson, California. With the unwavering support of his family and the incredible opportunities provided by Special Olympics Southern California (SOSC), Jason has not only become an embodiment of perseverance and success but has also achieved remarkable feats in the world of sports. Jason’s father, Gus Martinez, graciously shared his insights on Jason’s journey, their experiences with SOSC, and the transformative impact it has had on their lives.

For over two decades, Jason and his family have called Carson, California, home. They actively participate in SOSC activities in Torrance, where Jason is a proud athlete. He’s been a part of the SOSC family for an impressive 22 years, engaging in softball, basketball, swimming, and track and field which have not only kept him active but have also helped him build vital life skills.

Beyond sports, Jason is no stranger to the gym, dedicating approximately 12 hours a week to weightlifting, CrossFit, and cardio exercises. This commitment to maintaining his health and fitness showcases his determination and dedication to leading an active lifestyle. When he’s not on the field, court, or in the gym, Jason enjoys relaxation time, watching movies, and participating in a special needs social program in Torrance. It’s a testament to the balance he’s found in his life, exploring his interests, and engaging in social activities that contribute to his overall well-being.

Jason’s path to success isn’t a solitary one. It’s paved with the unwavering support of his family and friends, who provide the assistance he may require. Hard work and determination are at the core of Jason’s journey, helping him overcome challenges and achieve his goals. His enthusiasm for Special Olympics knows no bounds. He treasures the friendships he’s made, the physical well-being it’s instilled in him, and the competitive spirit it’s nurtured. Special Olympics has become an integral part of his life, offering him a platform to showcase his abilities, passions, and aspirations.

Inclusivity is a cornerstone of Special Olympics, and Jason’s experience reinforces its significance. His father Gus says, “Inclusion should definitely be taught. Jason has proven that people with Down Syndrome can do just about anything. Everyone at the gym treats him just like one of the guys getting on his workout. They offer assistance when needed no different than if it was for you or me.”

Participating in SOSC has not only improved Jason’s physical health but has also enhanced his social skills and motor abilities. It’s provided him with an environment that encourages growth, learning, and personal development.
