Special Olympics Southern California (SOSC) athlete Brett Laza received the prestigious LETR International Executive Council Athlete Award during the recent Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) Conference in Chicago in October. This accolade, created to recognize exceptional athletes contributing significantly to the success of the Torch Run at local, state, or national levels, highlights Laza’s unwavering dedication and impactful involvement with both SOSC and the LETR.

Laza’s journey with Special Olympics commenced in January 2005, stepping into the arena of Track and Field at the age of 12. His participation grew to encompass seven sports, transforming him into a role model for athletes across Southern California. Over the years, Brett evolved from a shy and reserved young man into a confident, independent athlete-leader and a Global Messenger.

Abbey Leffler, SOSC’s Development Director, described Laza’s remarkable growth and contributions over 15 years. Initially engaging with LETR events like Tip A Cop and the Polar Plunge, Brett swiftly became the ‘face’ of numerous Torch Run activities within his region. His fervor for running seamlessly merged with unwavering respect and admiration for law enforcement, solidifying his pivotal role in various Torch Run events.

His efforts formed lasting bonds with athletes and officers worldwide.

Sig Ceballos, a Retired California Highway Patrol Sergeant, and LETR Council Member, reinforced Laza’s impact within the SOSC and LETR communities. Laza’s dedication extends beyond sports; he became the first Special Olympics athlete appointed to an International committee in 2022, actively contributing to the 2023 World Games Final Leg Planning Committee for Berlin, Germany.

“Brett Laza exemplifies the Athlete Motto and embodies an unwavering passion for Special Olympics and LETR,” emphasized Leffler. His unconditional love and dedication to both communities position him as a cherished member, locally and globally.
