On Tuesday, March 5th, Special Olympics Southern California (SOSC) hosted its first-ever Volunteer Management Team (VMT) Retreat. The gathering brought together 11 dedicated VMT members for an afternoon immersed in inspiration, camaraderie, and forward-thinking discussions. Here’s a glimpse into the pivotal sessions that unfolded.
Unified Leadership Warm-Up
SOSC staff members Brian Richter, Dustin Plunkett, and Marvin Poquiz took center stage, illuminating the essence of Athlete Leadership. Their session was more than an introduction; it was a call to action, urging volunteers to incorporate the talents and perspectives of our athletes into their roles. This session also featured an Athlete Leadership panel which included SOSC athletes Jared Kozak and Marco Martinez.
FAQ Trivia Showdown
Under the guidance of SOSC staff member Melissa Ledbetter, SOSC trivia transformed into an epic clash of wits. Volunteers participated in a spirited competition, showcasing not only their knowledge but also their unwavering commitment to SOSC. Congratulations to Lorraine and Knight for emerging victorious in this game!
Being a SOSC Ambassador
In a session led by SOSC staff members Laura Mayo and Jennifer Rebollo, the veil was lifted on the responsibilities of VMT members. The distribution of Inclusion Revolution shirts, SOSC swag, and Volunteer Cards equipped each participant not just with tokens of appreciation but with symbols of trust and responsibility. The volunteers left empowered to represent SOSC with pride at future events.
The Future of VMT: Visioning Ahead
As the retreat progressed into the emerging roles of the VMT, it became a moment of revelation. Participants explored the many possibilities within leadership roles, personal development, community involvement, and the exciting variety of upcoming events. This session wasn’t only about providing information; it was about arming the VMT with the vision and tools essential for the future.
A Retreat of Recognition and Renewal
At the heart of this retreat was a sincere desire to shower volunteers with the recognition they truly deserve and to reflect on how to elevate the volunteer experience. The stage is set for VMT members to emerge as leaders in community ownership, expansion, and volunteer recruitment, bringing in a new era of engagement and impact for SOSC.
Upon the conclusion of the retreat, the smiles of the team were not just a testament to the joy of the day but a reflection of a shared vision for future. Let’s harness the energy, insights, and inspirations from this retreat to ensure every moment counts for our athletes, volunteers, and community!
