Meet Debi Dalton, a beacon of compassion and dedication in the realm of volunteerism, especially within the vibrant community of Special Olympics Southern California. For over ten years, Debi has poured her heart and soul into serving individuals with intellectual disabilities, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of countless athletes and their families.
A California native, Debi’s journey into the world of volunteerism was sparked by a serendipitous encounter while volunteering with her former employer’s booth at USC. At the event, she watched local Special Olympics athletes play basketball with such unity and spirit which deeply inspired her. That moment, she recalls, “hooked me line and sinker.” From then on, she became an integral part of Special Olympics volunteering at local events with athletics awards and eventually supervising volunteer teams at the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles in 2015.
What began as a spectator’s fascination blossomed into a full-fledged commitment. Debi’s involvement with Special Olympics has been a multifaceted journey, from coaching bowling to supervising global events and coordinating galas. However, it’s the personal connections and transformative moments that fuel her passion the most.
As a volunteer bowling coach for Tri-Valley Northridge, Debi’s journey began with a passion for the sport and a heart full of compassion. Drawn to the inclusive and supportive environment of Special Olympics Southern California, she found her calling in empowering athletes to reach their full potential on and off the lanes.
One of Debi’s most cherished memories is of a young athlete who had saved up his allowance to buy his own bowling ball. Through Debi’s guidance and encouragement, he not only improved his game but also earned his first gold medal at their local community-wide games. The sheer joy and pride in his accomplishment, mirrored in his tearful proclamation, “Coach, look, I DID IT!” remain etched in Debi’s heart as a testament to the power of perseverance and support.
For Debi, the true reward lies in witnessing the athletes’ growth and achievements, from receiving their first medal to making friends and cheering each other on at events like the yearly Bowling Championship. She believes that Special Olympics embodies diversity and inclusion in action, setting it apart from other organizations. Through her involvement, she aims to bridge the gap between communities and foster a culture of empathy and acceptance.
Looking ahead, Debi hopes to continue her journey with Special Olympics Southern California, serving as a role model for inclusion and positive change. Reflecting on her experience, she extends an earnest invitation to others:
Begin as a fan in the stand. What it gives you is a sense of togetherness and inclusion. Once you’re hooked, you will come back and do other volunteering.
Debi Dalton’s legacy is one of unwavering dedication, kindness, and advocacy—a testament to the profound impact one individual can make in the lives of many. In the heart of Southern California, her light shines brightly, illuminating the path toward a more inclusive and compassionate society.
