The evening will begin with the Parade of Champions, where Special Olympics athletes will take center stage with their determination shining brighter than ever. This year, we will proudly honor Sheriff Don Barnes for his dedication to SOSC. For years, he has championed inclusion, inspiring over 100 law enforcement officers annually to volunteer and advocate for these incredible athletes. His impact extends beyond the badge, creating opportunities that bridge communities and change lives.
We will also celebrate Alex Martin, the 2025 Betty Belden Palmer Athlete of the Year. His decade-long journey in Special Olympics has been nothing short of remarkable. Alex is a fierce competitor in multiple sports and a passionate leader and uses his voice as a Global Messenger to spread the message of inclusion. He is proof that ability knows no bounds.
Last year’s athlete award winner, Sara Thiel, recently spoke about her experience on the center stage.
What I liked the most about the Heart of a Champion Gala was seeing everyone outside of the sports,” Sara recalls. “My favorite memory from the night was that my coach, Tim, was the volunteer of the year! That made the night extra special for me, my friends, and family that came out. It is important to support Special Olympics athletes because once you meet us, you will want to be a part of our fun. Special Olympics has changed my life.
As the sun sets over the Pacific, attendees will raise their paddles in the Heart of a Champion auction, knowing every bid helps create opportunities for athletes to train, compete, and thrive.
