Volunteer Spotlight: Glendora Murray Finds Joy and Purpose Through Giving Back

by Leslie Sundal

In honor of National Volunteer Week, we’re shining a light on the passionate individuals who make a lasting impact through their time and service. One of those individuals is Glendora Murray, a dedicated member of the volunteer management team with Special Olympics Southern California (SOSC), who has been giving her time and heart to the organization for many years.

Glendora supports the coordination and registration of single-day volunteers at events, but her involvement runs much deeper. Over the years she has helped at local competitions, community dances, and major events like the Summer Games. Her volunteer journey began through her workplace, where employees were encouraged to get involved in the community. That’s when she had her first experience supporting a championship event at the Summer Games and it left a lasting impression.

She later discovered that her neighbor was a coach for SOSC, inspiring her to reconnect. From there her commitment only grew stronger. Special Olympics, became something deeply personal and meaningful to Glendora. It was more than an event—it became part of her heart.

“The atmosphere, the athletes, the excitement, the happiness you see in their faces at the games—it’s incredible,” Glendora shared.

That feeling of joy and community, combined with the strong friendships she’s built along the way keeps her coming back.

To Glendora, volunteering is one of the most rewarding ways she can spend her time. Once she experienced it she couldn’t imagine walking away. It’s not unusual for her to be found at local competitions as a volunteer or a fan.

To anyone curious about getting involved, Glendora has a simple message: “Come out to one of the local events or to the Summer Games or Fall Games and just see them in action… you’ll leave there inspired.”

We’re grateful for Glendora and all the incredible volunteers who make events possible through their dedication and heart. Thank you for being the driving force behind the joy, unity, and inspiration felt at every event.
